Disasters can happen in the blink of an eye and they can cause chaos just as fast. As you react to the situation and focus on getting your family to safety, your home can suffer serious damage in the process.

While keeping your family safe should always be your top priority, that doesn’t mean that dealing with your recovery after the emergency is over isn’t also important.

That’s where we come in! We are trained to help you recover from a fire, flood, storm or any other type of disaster. We will work hard to handle your entire restoration and we will also take care of other aspects of your recovery, including your insurance claim.

Responding Right Away

Regardless of the type of disaster you are faced with, your safety should always remain your top priority. Stay out of floodwaters, stay indoors during severe weather or get your family out of your home if it is on fire.

After you have determined everyone is safe and no emergency medical services are needed, it is truly important that you start the recovery process as quickly as possible. The longer your home damage goes unaddressed, the higher the risk that compounding damage will start to set in, making your situation even worse.

Give us a call as soon as you are able so we can start creating your restoration plan and gathering the team that will soon be at your doorstep. While you wait for us to arrive, take some photos of the damage that you can easily see.

Getting fresh images is crucial as your insurance company is going to want proof of the situation. You should also do some simple tasks like turning off water valves or opening windows to let your air ventilate as needed.

Leaving the Restoration to Us

Once our crew arrives, we will focus our efforts first on securing your home. It is our goal to stop the damage from continuing to get worse, so we will board up windows, secure your roof and pull possessions out of any damaged parts of your home. Our highly trained crew will focus on helping you recover in every way! In addition to our restoration services, we will also work on submitting your insurance claim.

We will walk around your home and put together a complete list of your losses, and we will take some of our own photos with our professional equipment. We will combine these with the images you took and then submit it all to your insurance company to start your claim. We will also make sure we are following all insurance inspection standards to keep your potential costs as low as possible.

When you leave your recovery to us, good things will happen. Our crew will help you navigate the unknown with confidence, and we will take care of your insurance needs with ease.

When a disaster strikes, call us to make your recovery process—insurance claims and all—simple.

One of the unique things about the United States is the different types of weather that vary across the nation. From humid and hot summers to ice cold winters, we have it all.

With all of this weather comes the potential for severe threats every season. In fact, the United States has at least 42 different kinds of weather alerts, and they are broken down into six different categories.

When you are in the middle of severe weather, trying to decipher any sort of alert can be confusing if you are not prepared. Thankfully, we really only need to fully understand the types of alerts that affect us here in Alamo Heights.

<h4creation">Alert Creation

Weather forecasting is a series of predictions that meteorologists make that attempt to forecast how different weather situations will play out. Even though they are simply predictions, a lot of research and model interpreting go into each one to make them as accurate as possible.

The National Weather Service is the large organization that is responsible for creating the forecasts all across the nation. They are broken down into six regional offices across the country to help keep the forecasts more localized. Our office is in the Southern Region and is actually located right in Texas in Fort Worth.

When the NWS creates their forecasts, staff use data from radar, seismic activity, solar patterns and other model predictions. From that forecast, then they send out any corresponding alerts. They attempt to be as accurate as possible to make sure the right people are informed of any incoming threats.

<h4it-a-watch-or-a-warning">Is It a Watch or a Warning?

Understanding the difference between a watch and a warning is of the utmost importance. They are two very simple concepts, but a warning carries a much larger risk than a watch. This language is actually universal across most weather risks.

If a watch is issued in our area, that simply means an incoming storm or weather event has the potential to turn into a more severe threat. Whether the storm is particularly strong or the current weather (heat, humidity, etc) is just right, this is the time to keep an eye on the sky.

If a watch turns into a warning, you should seek shelter immediately. When a warning is issued, there is a dangerous storm or situation present and everyone should be inside and out of the elements.

In Alamo Heights and Downtown San Antonio, we commonly see severe storms, tornadoes and flash flooding problems. We are located in “flash flood alley,” after all! It is important to understand each of the corresponding alerts for these events so you can properly prepare for them.

<h4home-and-property">Your Home and Property

Preparing your home in advance of a storm can help minimize damages. If you are aware of any watches before they turn into warnings, you have more time to get ready for any impending weather.

Removing or securing outdoor furniture and clearing your gutters reduces the risk of water issues and property damage. It is also a good idea to take inventory of your emergency kit and make sure it is placed in your safe shelter location.

When you need help with a restoration project, the first requirement that comes to mind is probably a company’s quality of work! When you use SERVPRO of Alamo Heights and Downtown San Antonio, we can promise you our highest quality work, every time.

In addition to our water, storm and fire damage restoration, we also offer deep-cleans of more troublesome issues like graffiti cleanup, along with mold remediation. Whatever you need help with, we are the team for you.

Do you want to know another bonus of using us as your restoration team? We are right in town in our beautiful neighborhood!

The 3 Types of Floods & the 4 Things They Are Often Caused By | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

4/12/2022 (Permalink)

a street completely submerged in water and a flood warning sign in roadway Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO of Alamo Heights has the team to help you recover from any disastrous event.

When people think of natural disasters, they often first think of hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning, but many people are surprised to learn that flooding is the most common disaster and that it claims the most amount of lives. It impacts homes, communities and even entire cities depending on the severity of the damage.

Flooding can impact any place throughout the U.S., but many floods have similar causality and traits. There are three main types of flooding, which occur for four typical reasons.

The 3 Types of Flooding

Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall impacts an area, overwhelming the ability of the ground to absorb the moisture. Flash floods are quite common, and excess runoff can carry away small objects, cars and people in its path.

River floods are described in the name. If a river becomes too full to be contained by the river bank, the water can quickly spill over the sides and lead to destruction.

Coastal floods occur by large bodies of water, when storm surges or cyclonic activity leads to oceans or gulfs rising to meet flood levels.

The 4 Frequent Causes of Natural Flooding

Heavy rainfall. When storms release an excess of rainfall or spend an extended period of time over an area, flash floods and river floods are likely. Urban areas typically carry the most risk, as they have a higher percentage of paved areas that do not have the ability to absorb water.

Oceanic activity. Storm surges, hurricanes and rising tides can cause water levels to rise in waves, which can invade coastal communities and wreak havoc.

Dams and levees failing. Many people are familiar with levee breaks due to the recent disaster of 2005, Hurricane Katrina. When cracks or excess pressure weakens a levee or dam, it overwhelms the structure and overpowers its ability to keep the water contained.

Snowmelts and ice dams. When heavy snow and extended periods of freezing temperatures occur, snow and ice can build up throughout the winter season. When these start to melt, they can lead to an excess of water flowing through an area. Ice dams or ice jams occur when built-up ice blocks water from being carried down the river, which can lead to the bank overflowing.

Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover from its disastrous effects. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your life.

Can You Trust Your Restoration Company? | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Disasters happen all the time. So whether your damage is caused by a kitchen fire, a random act of nature, or a storm, chances are you may need damage restoration or mold mitigation services for your home.

When that time comes, you’re going to need to make quick decisions, as you select a vendor to get your problem taken care of.

If you’re considering a partnership with a service company, here are a few vital questions you need answered.

Are They Valid?

While we all like to think the best of people, not everyone that shows up after an emergency has your best interests at heart. Sadly, major storms or disasters also bring out scammers. These tricksters are out for one thing and one thing only—a quick buck.

But SERVPRO is different. We’ve been a part of the national landscape for over 50 years, so we’re no fly-by-night newbies! We have garnered our reputation the old-fashioned way; we earned it.

In addition, national brands like the PGA Tour trust us for high-quality services. We provide high quality maintenance services for their affiliated tour stops and facilities.

Do They Have Resources?

When a disaster hits, you need a dependable company that you know can respond and start working immediately on your restoration.

Waiting a week after a storm plows through is not going to solve my immediate problems. If a storm damages your home, you need a company that can respond instantly. That’s why we’re available 247 for emergency situations.

What do I do if I think my AC unit is leaking in San Antonio, TX?

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

What do I do if I think my AC unit is leaking?

If your home has been damaged by water from AC leaking or condensation, you need a water damage restoration company with the experience, the skills, and the know-how to reverse the damage and make your space safe from mold, mildew, rot, and other water-related problems. But before we start repairing the damage caused by AC leaks, it’s important to find the source of the problem. In this article, we will discuss the common causes of air conditioning leaks and what you can do about them. The first step is finding the root cause of the problem, and to do that, it helps to have a better understanding of how AC units work.

How do air conditioners work?

In order to understand why your air conditioner is leaking, it’s important to know how your air conditioner works. Air conditioning systems often use an evaporator coil that absorbs the heat from the warm air inside your home. First, the warm air inside your home is drawn in through a vent and comes in contact with the evaporator coil. Once the air is cooled by the evaporator coil, a fan distributes the cold air throughout your home via air ducts.

What causes an AC unit to leak?

There are several issues that may cause your air conditioner to leak. If these issues aren’t addressed in time, it could cause flooding in your home. If it is difficult to pinpoint the cause of the problem, it is best to consult a professional.

Some common issues include:

  • A clogged condensate drain line
  • A dirty air filter
  • An old condensate drain pan

You might have a clogged condensate drain line

Imagine you’re holding a glass of cold water on a hot day and condensation forms on the outside of the glass. This is what happens to the evaporator coil as it absorbs the hot air. Inside the air conditioner, there is a condensate drain pan that collects the moisture formed and leads it to a drain line that brings it out of your home. Sometimes, the drain line can get clogged by dirt, dust, mold, or other debris, resulting in water leaking into your home.

You might have a dirty or clogged air filter

Your AC filter should be replaced about once every month. If your air filter is dirty, it makes your AC work harder, increasing the chances for something to go wrong. A dirty filter blocks the air flow to the evaporator coil, causing the coil to get very cold and potentially freeze. When the frozen coil thaws, it could cause the condensate drain pan to overflow and leak into your home.

You might need a new condensate drain pan

Over time, the drain pan in your AC unit can erode and rust. This is commonly the case with older AC units. If your AC unit is older than 12 years old, You might want to consider replacing your drain pan.

AIR CONDITIONER LEAK SAFETY CHECKLIST

HVAC condensation leak safety checklist

Here in Texas, it’s important to keep your AC unit well maintained, as it will be working hard during the brutally hot summer months. A leak can be a sign of a bigger problem with your AC. If you notice leaking, it’s important to take immediate measures in order to prevent water damage and flooding. Here’s what to do as soon as you notice your AC is leaking:

  1. Make sure your home is safe and that there aren’t any electrical or slip hazards

  2. Remove as much water as you can with either a shop vacuum on wet mode or by soaking it up with a towel. This is especially important if you have wooden floors or walls, as they are very prone to water damage and absorb water quickly.

  3. Contact our SERVPRO professionals to help you through your water damage emergency.

For Water Damage Services in San Antonio, call SERVPRO of Alamo Heights

SERVPRO of Alamo Heights provides convenient 24/7 emergency service, because water damage restoration can’t wait. Our Water Restoration Specialists are highly trained and use advanced equipment and techniques. You can rest assured that we will take care of your home.

The 5-Steps of the SERVPRO Water Damage Restoration Process

1. Fact finding to get to the root cause of the problem

When you first call our water damage specialists, they will ask initial questions that will help them respond to your water emergency quickly and effectively.

2. Asses the problem and create an action plan

Next, our specialists will thoroughly inspect the water damage and create an effective plan of action. This is vital for a successful commercial or residential restoration project. Once the plan is decided, execution begins with water removal. We use powerful pumps and vacuums to quickly remove the water to minimize further damage and prevent mold growth.

3. Completely dry the affected areas

The next step is drying and dehumidification. While the majority of the water has already been removed, there is still moisture in the floor and walls. We use specialized equipment to alter the temperature and humidity and remove the remaining, hard-to-access moisture. Moisture meters are used to ensure that all the moisture has been removed.

4. Clean and sanitize to minimize mold and mildew

Next is cleaning and sanitizing. SERVPRO professionals will clean your walls, floors, and any personal belongings that were affected by the water damage. Depending on the scenario, we may also use sanitizing treatments. In addition to cleaning and sanitizing, some deodorization may be required. Our specialists use industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment to treat tough and persistent odors.

5. Restore the space… Like it never even happened.

Lastly is the restoration process. This may include minor repairs including replacing drywall, wall panels, carpets and flooring, but sometimes major repairs, such as reconstructing a whole area or room, are necessary for a complete restoration.

When it comes to repairing your home after fire or water damage, the team you choose to work with matters.

Homeowners don’t like thinking about dealing with home damage, but the fact is that fire damage claims are common than you might think. According to the Insurance Information Institute, about one out of every 350 American homeowners will file a claim related to fire damage every year. (This statistic includes everything from harm related to appliance fires to lightning strikes, all of which fall under the general category of “fire damage.”)

When you combine all the common causes of home damage (wind, water, fire, storms and accidents), the number is much higher. About one out of every 20 American homeowners will file some claim this year.

Many of these homeowners, likely including some people you know, will need home restoration services. And when you want to restore your home to its original state, working with the best team is vital.

One of the main reasons homeowners know they can trust us is the team’s quality to do their restoration work.

Water can damage your home in a wide variety of ways. And if you’re like most homeowners, you have a few of the most common ways at the top of your mental list. That might include problems like a flash flood or a burst pipe.

But heavy rains, which are common in many places during the spring, are a significant cause of water damage. This is especially true if there are home maintenance issues that go unaddressed over time.

It’s not possible to prevent every type of water damage your home could suffer. But there is a lot you can do regarding maintaining your home that will help ensure it’s not vulnerable to damage caused by heavy rains.

Preparing Your Home and Family for Wet Weather

Our staff includes a dedicated team of water damage experts, so we have valuable insights into how you can protect your home from suffering water damage now and in the future. The good news is that basic home maintenance can help you stay safe from water damage.

Learn how your yard drains. Knowing how your yard drains is vital to protecting your home. If you notice that your yard is draining toward your home, then you might want to get in touch with a landscaping expert to look for ways to protect your yard.

Invest in helpful landscaping. Many people don’t realize that the right landscaping at your home can make a big difference when it comes to preventing water damage. Native plants, trees and bushes can be vital in protecting your home from water damage. Talk with landscaping experts in the area or visit a native plant sale for tips and ideas.

Consider sealing your roof. Sealing your roof can help protect your home from wind and water damage. In fact, experts estimate that almost 95% of water damage is caused by water seeping through gaps in your roof and shingles can be prevented with this step.

Prepare Your Home for Spring Storm Risks | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

heavy rain coming down from dark clouds If you experience any property damage from spring storms, contact SERVPRO of Alamo Heights.

Spring is finally coming to Texas.

It’s March now, and many of us are excited about the prospect of better weather, longer days and starting to enjoy more time outdoors grilling, gardening or just taking a walk in the fresh air.

Maybe you’re planning some home improvement projects, too. If that’s the case, it’s definitely worth considering adding some DIY projects that will protect your home from one of spring’s biggest weather threats—severe thunderstorms.

There’s nothing you can do to stop storms from hitting your community. But you can take steps to protect your home from these dangers. Here’s what you should consider.

Get Your Home Ready for Spring Storms

Here are some things to add to your seasonal to-do list:

Clean your home’s gutters. We talk about this step frequently in our home maintenance guidance, and there’s a good reason for that. Clean, clear gutters are an excellent way to keep water around your home flowing the right way, instead of causing water damage.

Examine your roof. You don’t want to discover there’s a problem with your roof after a heavy rainstorm. Instead, you’ll want to be sure your roof is in good shape if a storm starts hitting. Check for things like missing shingles and signs of leaks. Repair them.

Check your home’s sump pump for issues. You don’t want to find out there’s a problem with your sump pump when it rains. Instead, check it now for issues.

Examine your home’s exterior. Don’t let problems with overhanging tree limbs or loose items like patio furniture become a problem during storms. Instead, cut any tree limbs that hang over your roof or garage and secure things you can.

If a fire, flood or any other cause damage to your home, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help you.

A Look at Our Restore vs. Replace Mentality | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

When you receive damage to your home, whether it be from fire, water or a storm, there are a lot of emotions involved. After any traumatic event, it is common to cycle through many stages of adjustment as you cope with the harm that has been done to your home and your belongings.

While things can seem quite grim in the moments after you discover damage, when you choose us for restoration, you can count on us to get your home and belongings back to their pre-damaged state. We have developed a mentality that focuses on restoration instead of replacement, which saves you money and allows you to keep the belongings you already love.

Why We Value Restoration Instead of Replacement

We can help you save money on your insurance. While many types of damage done to your home can be claimed with your homeowners insurance, the cost of doing so can be staggering. For example, the average cost of a claim for water damage is over $10,000, which can lead to skyrocketing premiums. By restoring the items we can instead of having our customers claim a full replacement, we can lower this amount so you can save money.

We can protect your sentimental items. With our advanced restoration equipment, we can save items many people thought to be completely ruined. We have restored irreplaceable objects such as documents and photographs, expensive objects such as electronics, and high-value objects such as art for our customers because we understand that some things just can’t be replicated.

We make sure your home feels like home again. Our entire goal with restoration is to make your home feel like it did in its pre-damaged state—which is not possible without all the objects and belongings you have already grown to love. While we know we can’t restore everything every single time, we promise to do our best so you can keep your belongings and continue to use them safely.

If you have damages and are feeling overwhelmed, we are here to help. You can call us as soon as you need to in order to begin the restoration process. Contact us today to learn more.

Evaluating Your Business’ Disaster Preparedness | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

office furniture and supplies submerged under water in an office room Taking measures to reduce the time that your business is closed after a disaster is crucial for any company. Let SERVPRO of Alamo Heights be your part

Being aware of your business’ level of preparedness against a disaster is a smart move for any business owner. Though it may be something you do not like to consider, preparing in advance for a disaster can be a big factor in how quickly your business will be able to recover and reopen following the damage.

By being aware of your disaster preparedness levels, you can determine what further steps you can take to make sure your business is as safe as possible. Gaining an understanding of your insurance policy, your emergency supplies and how you will restore is the best way to start the process of being prepared.

Your Commercial Insurance Coverage

A general commercial policy is not always enough to provide complete coverage to your business, especially where natural disasters are concerned. Flood insurance is the most highly recommended type of auxiliary coverage, but it is also worth inquiring about business interruption insurance and commercial umbrella insurance to make sure you do not have any surprise gaps in coverage.

Your Emergency Plan and Supply Kit

Having a plan in place and stocking an emergency kit in your business is a great precaution to take. Be sure to take into account all possible disaster scenarios that could potentially impact you at your location, including weather and internal concerns such as fires. Make sure you are prepared both for an evacuation scenario and one in which you and your employees must remain in place until given other orders, which is when you would want an office emergency supply kit.

Your Plan for Restoration and Recovery

Limiting the downtime your business experiences as a result of a disaster is one of the best ways to mitigate the consequences an emergency causes. Knowing which commercial restoration company you would like to work with in advance of the disaster is one of the best things to do—this way you can start the restoration process right away once it is safe to re-enter the building. In addition to this, be aware of the qualifiers for the Small Business Administration’s disaster loans to receive assistance toward recovery.

If your business has been impacted by a disaster, you can contact us 247 for guidance on how to begin the commercial restoration process.

Why Home Fires Increase in the Winter | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

When the temperatures begin dropping, the likelihood of a house fire occurring begins to rise.

Home fires can occur for a variety of reasons, but it is important to be aware of the risks that are especially likely in the winter months in order to keep your family safer during the shorter days ahead. It is important to know the reasons why home fires increase in the winter as well as ways to prevent fires, both in the wintertime and year-round.

Reasons for Increased Home Fires in the Winter

An Increase in Cooking
Cooking—something most of us do every day—is consistently the top cause of home fires across the country, and this is not something that changes in the winter. In fact, it typically rises even more due to an increase in baking and general stove usage around the holidays.

The Risk of Heaters
Heating-related issues are the second-highest cause of house fires, with space heaters being the most common culprit. These fires are typically from flammable objects being too close to the heating source or a space heater tipping over when it is not equipped with an automatic shutoff.

Candles and Decorations
Anywhere there is an open flame there is an opportunity for a house fire to begin, which is why the use of decorative and religious candles can also lead to an uptick in house fires. Winter decorations can also be hazardous, with strings of lights and other electronics that are not frequently used being major culprits for fires.

Ways to Prevent Wintertime Fires

When it comes to house fires, practicing prevention is the best way to be prepared. Here are some general fire safety tips to remember year-round, but especially during the winter:

  • Check smoke alarms once every 30 days and replace every 10 years.
  • Always monitor open flames.
  • Select space heaters with automatic shut-offs in case they tip over.
  • Utilize a screen every time you use a fireplace.
  • Draft and practice an emergency escape plan with your household.

If your home has been impacted by a fire, call us right away. We are leaders in restoration and can help you recover quickly after a fire occurs.

Why Choose SERVPRO? Because Response Time Matters | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

3/20/2019 (Permalink)

When disaster strikes your home or business, time becomes an especially precious commodity. When it is your home or livelihood on the line, you don’t have the benefit of waiting for help—you need it right away.

We know that a fast response is crucial, which is why responding faster to any size disaster is more than just a slogan to us.

Why a Fast Response Matters

When it’s your belongings or business on the line, time is not a luxury you have regarding disaster cleanup. This is especially true when water damage has come into play, which can be through various means such as flooding, appliance and/or plumbing failures, storm damage and fire damage, as water is used to put out the fires.

It only takes mere minutes for water to spread throughout your property, where it will saturate everything in its path. The walls, the floors, upholstery and your belongings are fast casualties of water.

The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:

  • Drywall beginning to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces beginning to tarnish
  • Furniture beginning to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper items spreading and staining
  • The beginning of a musty odor

The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Between 48 hours to a week later, you could begin to see:

  • The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
  • Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
  • Metal beginning to rust and corrode
  • Paint beginning to blister
  • Wood flooring swelling and warping
  • The possibilities of serious biohazard contamination

Water damage that is left unchecked for over a week can lead to a dramatically increased restoration time and costs and can also impact structural safety.

Fire Safety Tips for Your Business | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

As a business owner, there are plenty of safety factors to take into consideration regarding risks to your business, staff and visitors.

Fires are one of those risks you need to spend a little extra time planning for and working toward preventing.

Leading Causes of Commercial Structure Fires

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) the leading causes of structure fires in office properties from 2007–2011 were (in order):

  1. Cooking equipment, 29% of fires
  2. Electrical distribution and lighting equipment, 12% of fires
  3. Heating equipment, 11% of fires
  4. Intentional, 10% of fires
  5. Smoking materials, 9% of fires
  6. Exposure, 4% of fires
  7. Electronic, office or entertainment equipment, 3% of fires

Of those causes, intentional, exposure, and electrical distribution and lighting equipment accounted for the most property damage.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in 2007, fires and explosions accounted for 3% of all workplace fatalities.

Looking to more recent numbers, the NFPA estimates that from 2007–2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,340 fires in office properties per year. Those fires resulted in an annual average of four deaths, 44 injuries and $112 million in direct property damage.

Protecting Your Business

There are many steps you can take to protect your business from the risk of fires. By focusing on fire risk assessment, fire prevention and staff education, you can help reduce the chance of a fire breaking out.

First, you must assess the risk of fire hazards. In some areas, the local government may even offer a visit from a fire marshal to help identify these risks and provide guidance on your fire prevention plan.

You’ll want to make sure that the right fire protection equipment is in place. This includes an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on each floor.

Finally, consider your people, aka the employees. By creating a fire plan and reviewing it with your staff, you’ll be making sure everyone knows what to do in the case of a fire.

Conduct fire drills at least once a year to keep the fire safety protocol fresh, and take time to review evacuation plans and where the first-aid kits are.

Despite your best efforts at prevention, the worst could always happen at your business. If a fire has damaged your business, SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights is available to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Understanding the Ways Wind Can Impact Your Home | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Many concerns come with severe storms, with damaging winds always a threat. These winds, which can come with little to no notice, can be problematic due to long-term structural impacts.

Concerns With Damaging Winds

While many think of damaging winds as those caused by a tornado or hurricane, these are not the only times when they may come into play. Traditionally, damaging winds are considered those with wind speeds exceeding 50–60 mph and are called “straight-line” winds, which stem from a strong thunderstorm. Their damage is different than the damage from a tornado.

The damage from these winds can be especially destructive, causing loose items to become projectiles. Windows and the roof can take the brunt of this damage, and if it’s extensive, it can also cause water damage to the inside of the home as the outside elements come indoors.

Anyone who lives in a thunderstorm-prone area can be at risk from damaging winds, but there are some structures that are especially at risk. Mobile homes, even those that are anchored, could be seriously damaged with wind gusts over 80 mph.

How to Protect Your Property

There are a number of steps you can take to protect your property from damaging winds, but keep the “Two R’s” in mind: reinforce and remove.

  • Have a professional reinforce your garage door.

  • Remove or anchor loose objects on your property that could be moved or tossed by the wind. Don’t forget about the trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.

  • Have a professional remove large or dying trees and branches that could be blown over on your home.

Not all high wind circumstances come with advanced warning, as we all know, but some of these action items can be taken care of with a “just in case” logic. Also, if you are building a new home or renovating an older home, be sure the windows, walls and doors meet building code for your area.

Damaging winds from storms can open your home up for serious damage, from structural damage to water damage. If your home has been hit by damaging winds and resulting water damage, the highly trained specialists at SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights are here to help with the cleanup and restoration of your home.

Storm Preparation in San Antonio

8/22/2018 (Permalink)

Living in this beautiful Alamo City, we often just think of the sun and hot temperatures.  However, we do get strong thunderstorms that bring heavy rain, winds that cause damage, and potential flooding.  We have even had hurricane warnings as recent as last year with Hurricane Harvey.  Although we didn't get hit by the Harvey, it is important to always be prepared.

An important part of preparation for any storm event is to know what each weather term means.  The most common weather terms associated with significant storms include watch, warning, and advisory.  Definitions of these terms can be found at the link provided.  These terms and their definitions will help you to decide what to do if the alerts are issued.

Another key to preparation is ensuring that you have supplies ready and available.  An emergency kit that is well stocked can make a world of difference in extreme weather.  For tips on what to put in this kit visit Ready.gov.  It is important to remember your pets too and prepare a kit that includes any supplies they need.  Supplies during times of disaster can be life saving.

Finally, if a disaster strikes and your home or office is affected you should have a plan for who can help.  Alamo Heights stands ready to help deal with the aftermath of any storm damage.  For commercial properties, we offer a free Emergency Ready Plan to help plan for potential disasters.  Call us today at (210) 822-2063 to discuss or if you have any storm damage.
